How to use the SOAP bible study method?

How-To-Use-The-SOAP-Method-Of-Bible-Study

The SOAP is an acronym for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.

Let’s get into it

S – Scripture

Yes, S in the SOAP bible study method stands for Scripture, this part is where you select the verse of scripture you want to study and then pen it down in the verse section of your bible study notebook.

The best approach to do this is to study the bible either by books or by topic.

To study by topic,

  • simply download the YouVersion Bible App from your device play store.
  • Next, Navigate to the the”search menu” on the YouVersion Bible app dashboard
  • Type in your topic of interest
  • A list of scriptures centered around your interest will be displayed
  • Write them down in your bible study notebook

If you are settling for the book study option, you can start out by reading the book of John, as this reveals the love of God to humanity.

On the other way round, you can start book study by reading the short books of the bible.

O – Observation

The next letter in the SOAP method of bible study is the acronym O, and it stands for observation.

This is where you have to meditate on the scripture you penned down in the previous SOAP acronym.

This part is what I call seeing through God’s eye because it is required of you to spend more time here so that you will get the true intent of the verse you are meditating on.

Does it refer to you, the body of Christ, your nation, etc?

Close your eyes, shift your focus on Jesus, with that scripture at heart, and you will realize that understanding begins to come, convictions are built, why? Christ is made wisdom unto us, meditating on him unveils the wisdom hidden in the word to you.

A – Application

In this part, you have to be intentional.

Intentional in the sense that you have to apply the convictions built to your day-to-day life.

Most importantly, you must know that there is no point studying the word if you won’t act on it. Faith is acting on God’s word. it is putting the word of God to action.

Studying the word without putting it to action or applying it to your life and people around is what i call head knowledge, and head knowledge has never helped anyone.

We are called to minister to creation.

If the verse says Jesus raised a dead person, it means you to can, why? As a new creation, Christ is your life, he is your reality, you have his ability, you can do what he did and even greater than he did during his earth walk.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12 KJV

Apply the word to your life, that is the essence to which you study the word

P – Prayer

Finally, on the SOAP bible study method, the P stands for prayer and this most importantly should be a crucial part of your bible study before, during, and after your bible study.

Prayer should be a part of your daily schedule, Praying unveils mystery to you.

Most importantly, praying from understanding gives you more leverage and peace.

Choose to pray more so that everything that has hindered the profiting of God’s word in your life will be unveiled

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV

Having said all that, lets move to the next thing on board which is:

SOAP bible study method examples

Let’s see an example of the SOAP bible study method using philippians 4:19

The Lord shall supply all my needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus

Scripture – Write down philippians 4:19 in your bible study notebook

O – Riches means fatness the best of his resources. I do not have to worry about a thing because i know that my needs are supplied according to the best resources of my Heavenly father.

And this covers all facets of my life, not just a portion. The scripture says ‘all my needs’

A – I rely on his promise because I know that faithful is he that has promised, his words are yea and amen. So whenever i am faced with a need, I just rely on his word to supply my needs according to the best of his resources.

P – I start out by thanking God for meeting my needs with the best resources in his kingdom because that is what the scripture says and I simply act on what it says.

next, I present my needs before him, after which i thank him again.

Scripture says in

Philippians 4:6 KJV Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

It’s that simple, but you must know that this will take time and no time spent with God is a waste.

Finally, you should adopt the SOAP bible study plan as a part of your daily routine.

Watch God’s word work wonders in your life.

SOAP is a bible study method that stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.

It’s easy to understand why this bible study technique has been so popular with Christians over the years; it provides a simple framework for understanding scripture on your own or in groups. One of the best things about SOAP Bible Study is how flexible it is! You can use it as an individual or group activity, you don’t have to read straight through the whole Bible (although some people do!), and there are no rules about what order to approach passages.
